Clarity by Design

Clarity by Design- A Data Model Approach to Improve Construction Project Outcomes - Written By Bryan Tay

Digital Engineering (DE) projects are often challenged by inconsistent or unclear data requirements. On a live project already in advanced design stages, overlapping stakeholder demands, undefined business rules, and the absence of standard data dictionaries risked inefficiency and rework. This paper outlines an outcome-focused methodology that progressively clarified, rationalised, and implemented data requirements without disrupting design. The approach included targeted workshops, outcome-based requirement testing, progressive rollout of datasets, and development of an Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD), also referred to as a Data Model, to manage complexity. The result was reduced duplication, improved clarity, and a scalable framework for future projects.
